Why Kiva Analytics?

Current analytics systems use cookies or comparable technologies which enable users to be tracked, profiled and targeted with, for example, advertising. Cookies also make it possible to track users’ movement between different sites.

Legislation requires that user behavior tracking needs to happen only with the explicit consent given by the user. Many users are suspicious of cookies and due to this, at worst up to 50% of users deny tracking cookies. As a result of this, the data obtained from users for the development of services is incomplete and does not give a realistic picture of the use of the service.

Kiva Analytics (KA) is a cookie-free analytics system, the purpose of which is to generate supplementary data about users who do not give consent for tracking purposes. In order for this to be possible from a legal point of view, KA is structured in such a way that it cannot track or profile users, and therefore cannot target them with, for example, marketing communications. The same user can only be recognized in a small window of time – at most during the same day.

Google Analytics 4 versus Kiva Analytics

How does Kiva Analytics work?

The idea behind all Kiva Analytics data collection is that no feature or metric contains anything that could identify the user as a specific person.

From any user’s online session, only events specifically defined to be collected are sent to Kiva’s server and a cookie-free identifier is created for the user. The IP address is not forwarded and is therefore not stored on the Google Analytics servers. The data from which the identifier is calculated will be lost within a day. In practice, the same user cannot be identified in any part of the system for a maximum of one day.

The information collected by Kiva Analytics can be viewed through the Google Analytics user interface. Both Universal Analytics and Google Analytics 4 versions are supported. This is intentional, as this helps to utilize the comparative information thus collected through a familiar tool. Kiva Analytics appears in Google Analytics as its own data set, separate from the cookie-based data collected.

One of the most central ideas of the operating principle is that Kiva Analytics chooses precisely which data is passed on. This ensures that, for example, no data ends up in Google Analytics that would require permission to be asked from the user.

How to utilize information collected with Kiva Analytics?

Google Analytics data and Kiva Analytics data are both displayed in separate properties in Google Analytics, and the data contained in both can be displayed together using e.g. Looker Studio.

Since Kiva Analytics data cannot show different sessions of the same user over different days due to its cookie-free collection method, this should be taken into account when analyzing the data.

The easiest way is to view daily data. In this comparison, the information accumulated within one day with different monitoring methods:

Kiva Analytics vs Google Analytics

From the number of users and sessions logged into the monitoring, it is easy to notice that during the day in question, about a third of the users’ visits to the service had not been logged into Google Analytics.

Kiva Analytics also produces information on the ability of sources and media to bring traffic and conversions. Since the tracking information is collected without cookies, it is not possible to create target audiences from users in the same way as typically can be done in Google Analytics. The source data works best as comparison data:

Frequently asked questions

Who owns the data collected with Kiva Analytics?

The customer owns their data and decides on its use. The data collection is planned together with the customer and we only collect the essential data. The information is anonymous, meaning it cannot be linked to any individuals. Customers can define to whom they want to grant access to the collected information.

Can Kiva use it for its own business purposes?

No. As a standard practice, Kiva is not allowed to use data for purposes other than those specified by the customer.

Once the data appears in Google Analytics, doesn’t it then go to Google’s servers?

Yes, but the collected data does not contain any identifying information, i.e. it cannot be linked to any individuals. The customer can define with us what information they want Kiva Analytics to collect. However, this is within the framework that data protection regulations allow to be collected without a separate cookie consent.

If we at some point want to terminate our cooperation with Kiva, what happens to Kiva Analytics?

You can continue using Kiva Analytics with a separate contract. The contract covers the cloud service and the necessary code.
